How often should a bike chain be replaced?
There isn't one mileage that applies to every cyclist.
How quickly a chain wears depends on things such as:
How often you ride
Weather and riding conditions
Hills and terrain
How clean the drivetrain is
How well the chain is lubricated
The amount of use your bike gets
The best approach is to check chain wear regularly rather than waiting for it to start causing problems.
Do I need a new chain or a new cassette?
Not always both.
If your chain is worn but the cassette is still in good condition, replacing the chain may be all that's needed.
However, if a chain has been ridden for too long while worn, it can accelerate wear on the cassette and chainrings. In these cases, fitting a new chain to a badly worn cassette can result in the new chain skipping.
That's why we check the condition of the drivetrain before replacing parts.
